Lesson 2: Humectants

Welcome to your Humectants Lesson

If oils nourish and protect the skin,
Humectants are what bring water into it.

They are the foundation of hydration — drawing moisture into the skin and helping maintain softness, elasticity, and function.

Understanding humectants allows you to formulate products that:

  • Hydrate deeply

  • Support the skin barrier

  • Improve texture and resilience

This is where skincare shifts from surface-level to functional

WHAT ARE HUMECTANTS?
Humectants are water-attracting molecules.
They work by:

  • Drawing water from the environment or deeper skin layers

  • Binding that water within the stratum corneum

  • Increasing hydration and flexibility

KEY CONCEPT
Hydration is not the same as moisturisation.
Humectants = bring water into the skin
Oils = seal and protect that water

This is why they must be used together in formulations.

HUMECTANT PROFILES

GLYCERIN
(Glycerol)
Composition
A small, water-soluble molecule with strong hygroscopic properties.
Skin Interaction
Attracts water into the stratum corneum
Improves skin hydration and elasticity
Supports barrier recovery

Functional Benefits
Highly effective at low concentrations (2–5%)
Enhances penetration of other actives
Improves skin smoothness
Considerations
Can feel sticky at higher percentages

Requires an occlusive to prevent water loss
Oil Pairing
Best paired with:
Jojoba Oil (barrier balance)
Sweet Almond Oil (softening)
Meadowfoam Oil (stability + sealing)

HYALURONIC ACID (HA)
Composition
A large polysaccharide capable of binding up to 1000x its weight in water.
Skin Interaction

  • Forms a hydration film on the skin

  • Plumps and smooths

  • Reduces appearance of fine lines

Functional Benefits

  • Immediate hydration effect

  • Improves skin texture

  • Suitable for all skin types

Considerations

  • Can feel tight or dry in low humidity if not sealed

  • Needs correct molecular weight selection

Oil Pairing
Best paired with:
Jojoba Oil (mimics sebum + seals)
Squalane or Meadowfoam (light occlusion)
Rosehip (for active repair + hydration combo)

ALOE VERA
(Aloe barbadensis Leaf Extract)
Composition
Rich in polysaccharides, enzymes, and minerals.
Skin Interaction

  • Provides lightweight hydration

  • Soothes irritation and inflammation

  • Supports wound healing

Functional Benefits

  • Calming

  • Anti-inflammatory

  • Suitable for sensitive skin

Considerations

  • Light hydration—needs layering

  • Can feel tight when used alone

Oil Pairing
Best paired with:

  • Hemp Seed Oil (anti-inflammatory synergy)

  • Sweet Almond Oil (softening)

  • Avocado Oil (deeper nourishment)

SODIUM PCA
Composition
A component of the skin’s Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF).
Skin Interaction

  • Strong water-binding ability

  • Maintains skin hydration balance

  • Improves elasticity

Functional Benefits

  • Non-sticky hydration

  • Highly compatible with skin

  • Enhances softness

Considerations

  • Must be used in water-based formulations

  • Requires preservation

Oil Pairing
Best paired with:

  • Jojoba Oil (barrier support)

  • Abyssinian Oil (lightweight finish)

  • Meadowfoam Oil (stability + seal)

HONEY (RAW / COSMETIC GRADE)
Composition

  • A natural humectant rich in sugars, enzymes, and antioxidants.

Skin Interaction

  • Draws moisture into the skin

  • Provides mild antimicrobial activity

  • Supports healing

Functional Benefits

  • Hydrating

  • Soothing

  • Protective

Considerations

  • Sticky texture

  • Requires preservation in formulations

Oil Pairing
Best paired with:

  • Olive Oil (deep nourishment)

  • Avocado Oil (repair + richness)

  • Jojoba Oil (balance)

PANTHENOL (VITAMIN B5)
Composition
A provitamin that converts to pantothenic acid in the skin.

Skin Interaction

  • Attracts and retains moisture

  • Strengthens skin barrier

  • Reduces irritation

Functional Benefits

  • Improves softness and elasticity

  • Supports healing

  • Enhances hydration retention

Considerations
Works best in combination with other humectants
Oil Pairing
Best paired with:
Jojoba Oil (barrier mimicry)
Rosehip Oil (repair + regeneration)
Sacha Inci (anti-inflammatory)

FORMULATION PRINCIPLE

💧 The Hydration Rule:

Humectant + Oil = Functional Skincare
Without oils:
Water evaporates
Skin can become tighter or drier

With oils:
Hydration is sealed
Skin remains soft, balanced, and protected

CLOSING

When you understand hydration, you begin to understand skin on a deeper level.

  • Humectants bring water

  • Oils hold it

Together, they create a balanced product.

This is the foundation of every effective formulation.
